The Susan Hayhurst Raconteur Contest, held every year by Stockport Ladies Speakers Club, was started many years ago by Doreen Hayhurst, a long term member and former president of the club, in memory of her daughter, Susie. Although Susie was born severely disabled, she was loved and cared for by her family until she died at the age of 28. Despite her disabilities, Susie loved to be told stories and loved to laugh. And it was this that Doreen and the club members wished to be remembered.
The contest is open to all speaking clubs in the area and all the speakers are asked to give the audience is a story – maybe personal, perhaps funny or sad, whimsical or plain spooky. Over the years there have been many that have stuck in the memories of the audience – who are the contest judges.
